Snippets from WaPo on Kingsbury's offense in first day of OTA's:

"Kingsbury, who dislikes the “Air Raid” label, said he’s still building his offense. He wants the scheme to maximize rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, to be “Year 1 of the Commanders’ offense and not Year 5 of the Arizona Cardinals’.” But tight end Zach Ertz, who played for Kingsbury in Arizona, acknowledged his coach will probably stick with some core concepts that others have called “Air Raid-adjacent.”

Personnel
Kingsbury will probably major in “11” personnel, the most popular grouping in the NFL: three wide receivers, one tight end and one running back.

He is likely to minor in “12” — a set featuring two tight ends — and could lean further into groupings with two running backs, which he only used about 3.5 percent of the time in Arizona, per TruMedia. Both would be keyed by versatile players such as tight end Ben Sinnott and running back Austin Ekeler.

Pass/run split
Kingsbury almost certainly will run the ball more than predecessor Eric Bieniemy. But during the offseason program, which is roughly a dozen workouts with mostly limited contact, the Commanders will focus on passing.
Coach Dan Quinn praised Daniels’s hard work in learning the system and said the team is choosing drills that maximize his reps. A lingering question: How often will Kingsbury design runs for Daniels as opposed to letting him find big gains via scrambles?

Shotgun
Get ready for a lot of shotgun. Daniels took most of his snaps there Tuesday. He is comfortable in the shotgun — he used it 92.8 percent of the time during his college career, per TruMedia — and has two coaches on staff who believe it can force opposing defenses to respect the quarterback as a runner.

Protection
Two criticisms of Kingsbury’s offense in Arizona: He didn’t marry run and pass concepts well, and his protection plans were simplistic. Kingsbury hired a few key coaches, seemingly to help address those concerns, and has been “really impressed” by Daniels’s advanced understanding of how to adjust the offensive line.

“A lot of guys coming into the league, [protection is] not an area that they majored in in college,” he said. “They don’t have a lot of time. It’s four hours per day. They have rules. But he’s really well-versed in the protections, and he works at it.”

Before the snap
On Day 1, Kingsbury devoted a portion of the workout to “hurry-up” offense. Daniels yelled code words and flashed hand signals to communicate the play to his teammates. Kingsbury likes going no-huddle, and that could help Daniels parse defensive looks before the snap.
In Arizona, Kingsbury embraced motion over time but wasn’t among the NFL’s heaviest users. On Tuesday, the Commanders used some motion, but it’s unclear whether he will take a big step forward from his last season with the Cardinals.

After the snap
While it’s impossible to say which concepts will be core parts of the offense, we can make some reasonable assumptions. In the passing game, the team will probably lean on screens, a staple of LSU’s offense with Daniels last season, and “quick game” to overcome deficiencies on the offensive line.
Kingsbury also could feature the slot fade, a positive play for Daniels last season. On Tuesday, he threw a beautiful fade to wide receiver Davion Davis, and it was easy to imagine Daniels throwing it in a big game to wideout Jahan Dotson or someone such as him."

Interesting we got 3 prime time games this year. We also travel the least amount of miles of any team which is a good thing. The only negative is our bye is not till week 14 which is pretty late. Overall it’s a fair schedule.

we have 2 prime time games, but I agree it's a fair schedule

I'm hopeful that we see a very different effort from both players & coaches - 7 to 9 wins would be good

AFC north is a tough draw but more favorable overall than in recent years. Better coaching and general talent should help as well.

I'm good with the schedule, will give this remade roster a solid benchmark on where to go.
- The Commanders are signing WR Damiere Byrd, per source. Pretty sure he has ties to Kingsbury

He has done a lot of punt and kick returning . . . seems he will compete for that role.

Not really sure the Byrd signing. Yes he’s fast 4.28 speed but he’s 31 now. Not particularly tall only 5’9. Did return kicks and punts but has 15 punt returns in his career with 11 in 2018 and 14 kickoffs total with 7 in 2017.

Maybe they didn’t like what they saw of Crowder in OTAs in the return game and Kazmir still isn’t reliable.

I’m all about competition too. If they were gonna bring in a wideout, I would have preferred a taller 6’4 type. They tried out Martavias Bryant the same day as Byrd. If you remember Bryant from the ol Steelers, he’s that big body type that we are still missing. The only big wideout we have on the roster is Tremayne but he was a rookie free agent last year, not sure he’s gonna make the team let alone contribute.

We have to assume they have more information then we do. I thought the same thing though.

This from Bryan Manning (Commanders News) ...
A common comparison for the Washington Commanders recently has been the 2023 Houston Texans. The Texans went from worst to first last season after winning just three games in 2022. The Commanders won four games last season, and have a new general manager, coaching staff, and plenty of new players. The key ingredient in comparing the 2023 Texans and 2024 Commanders is the quarterbacks. Houston selected C.J. Stroud at No. 2 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, while Washington chose Jayden Daniels at No. 2 overall last month. Stroud was phenomenal as a rookie, looking like a 10-year veteran All-Pro at times in leading the Texans to the AFC South title. Stroud led Houston to a playoff win, too. Can the Commanders follow a similar blueprint? Bleacher Report recently ranked eight rebuilding teams and their chances of making the playoffs next season. The Commanders came in at No. 5 with the following explanation:

"The Washington Commanders slide into the rankings one spot above the Tennessee Titans because they have a coaching staff with a solid track record. Head coach Dan Quinn quickly turned around the Atlanta Falcons in his first stint as an NFL lead skipper. After a 6-10 season in 2014, they went 8-8 in the following year under his direction. If seven teams had made the playoffs in both conferences back then, he would have had a playoff squad in his first year as the Falcons' lead skipper. Quinn could lead a quick turnaround in Washington as well.
The Commanders selected 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft. He’ll have a solid receiver group that features Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson and rookie third-rounder Luke McCaffrey.
Washington also signed pass-catching running back Austin Ekeler, who has hauled in 440 passes for 3,884 yards and 30 touchdowns in seven seasons.
The Commanders signed edge-rushers Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr., who both played under Quinn when he served as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator. Linebacker Bobby Wagner is also familiar with Quinn from their time with the Seattle Seahawks, and he’s coming off a Pro Bowl campaign.
The Commanders' offense could have a decent year with Daniels able to make plays with his arm and legs under experienced offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who, as a play-caller, helped quarterback Kyler Murray put together Pro Bowl campaigns in 2020 and 2021.
Though Quinn won’t be calling the defensive plays in Washington, his familiarity with the roster personnel can help turn last year’s worst defense in yards and points allowed into a formidable unit. Of course, the odds are against the Commanders making the playoffs. However, the talent on Washington’s roster last season was better than 4-13. Now, the Commanders have a proven coaching staff, and you can bet the defense will be better than last season’s 32nd-ranked unit."

The four teams ranked ahead of Washington were the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders. The first three teams should be better than the Commanders in 2024, but we aren’t so sure about the Raiders. As of now, Washington is the greatest unknown in the NFL, with so many new players and coaches. That could lead to a slow start, or the team could gel quickly behind its rookie quarterback and surprise some people.

I'm VERY happy that we ended up with Jayden Daniels. I was not as sure about his future as you were BUT I'm V happy that he's with us now. I'm sure we'll have a better offense than last season & I'm also sure that we'll have a better defense than last season although that's not a very high bar.

I wonder how the McManus allegations turns out. Reading some fans, they act like AP made the biggest and fatal mistake signing him knowing about this potential lawsuit. Maybe something happened but I for one assume he is innocent till proven guilty. I remember how that Bills rookie punter was cut based on a bogus allegation of rape. Why the team didn’t back him till further developments was wrong in my opinion.

As far as the McManus situation is concerned, the team (or AP) did nothing wrong - just waiting to see what happens

Well McManus was released. Probably the best thing to limit any distractions on the season but I’m not too confident on what is out there.

NO! Look Aiyuk is a good player but he is not a game changer that Tyreek or JJ are. He apparently wants $30 mil plus per year. He’s only 6’ and runs a 4.5 40 so not a tall receiver or super fast. To get him, we would need to give up draft capital and I don’t care if it’s a third but we are building a team and getting a receiver when we have a rookie qb doesn’t make sense to me. We drafted Luke McCaffrey and with him on the outside with Jahan in the slot we should be fine.

I know there are rumors of Aiyuk being traded but I seriously doubt AP will make the move.

I'm having a conversation about it for sure. Aiyuk, McLaurin and Dotson could potentially be one of the better WR groups in the league. His yard per catch was 2nd in the NFL at almost 18yds, his catch percentage is extremely high for a WR, back to back 1000 yd seasons, 26 years old, not a straight line burner but has excellent quickness for his size and very good hands. It's an offensive league, you have to score and talent at receiver only helps a young QB. Look at how Brown helped Philly or Lamb in Dallas. The front office obviously knows him, they can afford to pay him, it's just a question of compensation to SF but they are in less of a bind than the Niners are on this front.

I think we should do it. Especially if it only takes a 3rd rounder. He plays bigger and faster than his measurables.

I don't want Aiyuk. He is a good player, but not worth anywhere near $30M/year plus whatever draft capital will be required in trade. We need to grow our own and then re-sign our own or convert them into assets. I don't want other teams' players looking to get paid for what they did for their original team. The success rate on that just isn't large enough, and the cost of missing is just too high.
