Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
We now have our QB & we still have 5 of the next 70 picks. While we have seen several good offensive linemen go in the draft that means there could be some good offensive linemen available in the coming weeks - it doesn't all have to come through the draft
Peters & co just need to continue the good work

Jerzhan Newton was an interesting pick. He gave Penn State all they could handle last fall. Our back up DT's pretty much suck so adding Newton to the mix makes sense.

I could see them rotating all the players across the line. Maybe Jonathan and Daron plays end on some plays. This guy Newton also could be a big defensive end. It’s all about position versatility.

Mentioned in the other thread that we might see a solid mix of 3-3-5 and 5-2-4 formations

So we have no 4th rounder. Can we get back into the 4th Round?

I was pissed when this pick happened but since they addressed needs with other picks, I approve now and I agree with your point. Pretty good day 2 for WC. The only quibble I would have is pick an OT at #53 and a TE at #67, but it may not much of a difference to actual day 2 picks.

I think Coleman is a bonified left tackle. Crazy long arms.

I don’t think our backup DTs suck at all. John Ridgeway is a very good player and an excellent backup. Of course, Dan Quinn has already cut him once, so maybe he doesn’t like him.lorimike wrote:Jerzhan Newton was an interesting pick. He gave Penn State all they could handle last fall. Interesting that once we took Newton that a run on DTs followed

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
CBS 2024 Draft Grade ...
Washington Commanders
ROUND PICK PLAYER GRADE
1 2 Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU A
2 36 Johnny Newton, DL, Illinois A+
2 50 Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan B+
2 53 Ben Sinnott, TE, Kansas State A+
3 67 Brandon Coleman, OT, TCU A
3 100 Luke McCaffrey, WR, Rice B+
5 139 Jordan Magee, LB, Temple A-
5 161 Dominique Hampton, S, Washington B-
7 222 Javontae Jean-Baptiste, DL, Notre Dame A-
GM Adam Peters began his tenure in Washington with a bang. Daniels, Newton, Sainristil, Sinnott, Coleman, McCaffrey. My word. Those are all plus athletes with clean film who excel in their specific roles. Magee is a bendy off-ball linebacker with serious juice, and Hampton, while older, has as much athletic prowess as anyone in the class.

We snatched Ridgeway off waivers when Dallas tried to slip him onto their practice squad. It's a frequent procedure for 5th round and later picks and usually not risky. We were alert and grabbed him.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
As i read up on the picks, I'm pleased with how this staff went about this draft. They added guys who are all high end athletes, several were team captains, and all were praised for being tough and ready to step in.
Daniels- obviously has lots of talent and steps in with a lot of expectations but with a staff that hand picked him and will be deeply invested (and tied) to his success. They've added some surrounding talent now we gotta hope the coaches help him, he grows as a player and we get a little side dish of luck with him.
Newton- wasn't expecting this but I love this pick. For as good as Payne and Allen can be, they were not very effective as last season wore and looking to the future, Allen has no more guaranteed money after this year if it comes to that. Newton can play across the line, is an aggressive disruptor and fits the attacking style of D that Quinn has used. Ridgeway was a nice addition but is hardly unreplaceable and Mathis simply hasn't been able to get on the field that much. If Newton pushes that squad up, then that's a good thing.
Sainristril- fills an immediate need at slot corner with Fuller leaving and all I see is that he could quickly emerge as one of the best at that spot. Newton helping the dline get pressure combined with Sainstril eating up the short area stuff should really help this team.
Sinnot- probably the easiest pick to criticize even though it's a need, but that's mostly due to people expecting a OT at this spot. Heard a guy on radio this am talking about him and said that while he isn't a scary good athlete, he's very strong, a quality blocker with sure hands who, as he improves his route running, likely becomes TE2 early. The staff made mention of him being like a hybrid combination of Juszczyk and Kittle.
Coleman- could be a real sleeper and a possible answer at LT. Physical traits, versatile, captain and plays with attitude. Word is he needs to work on consistency and technique to nail down LT, likely could step right in as a OG, but be nice if he can learn behind Lucas and take that spot.
McCaffrey- could be another sneaky good pick. He's got size, had some of the quickest splits at combine and good top end speed to boot. Add in his QB experience and he understands the spacing and timing of the passing game. Nice fill in for the slot and outside.
Magee- top level athlete who can really run, has lots of experience and is a solid tackler. He can get lost in the wash at times, but learning for a year with this group will help and he could be a replacement starter next year if any of Wagner/David move on. Worst case he's a solid ST addition.
Hampton- another physical freak with great size and speed for the position. Another guy that lifts the talent floor some and can push the starters. Solid ST.
Jean-Baptiste- late bloomer with some upside. Needs to refine and get stronger but understands the game and has some juice. With Toney being released, adding a developmental pass rusher makes sense and this a good spot to take a guy like this.
Overall, on paper at least, this team looks to have added a decent amount of talent between the FA additions and this crop of draft picks. The oline will be something to watch and should have plenty of competition which hopefully creates an environment where the best guys win out and prove worth adding. The front 7 of the D looks much improved and with some potential added across DB and S that group should also benefit from the competition. Trying to minimize my bias, but as I compare what this team did against the rest of the division I feel pretty good. Philly has lost some vet talent but added a weapon in Barkley and did well to address their weak secondary, so IMO they are still the team to beat. Dallas lost via attrition and while they addressed some losses on their o-line, I think they did not fix many of their problems and take a step back. NY landed a stud in Nabers but they lost their best offensive player, still have a shaky oline and QB and their coaching situation was such a mess last year and it seems like any rocky roads at all for them and the stress will mount quickly.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
^^^ THANKS Moe - some good stuff there - I agree with you & Vegas - this staff is looking to add a bunch of players to the mix & it will be up to the position coaches (& the players) to get the most out of them - we have improved the talent level now it is up to the coaches
the focus for the draft (after the obvious) seems to be on adding high character/'leader type' players
I am very encouraged by what looks to me to be a concerted effort to change the culture here

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
and there's more ...
On Sunday, longtime NFL writer Pete Prisco of CBS Sports weighed in on the Commanders’ draft class. He’s a big fan. In fact, the A+ that Prisco gave Washington was the only one he handed out for the 2024 draft.
'In my book, five teams had really good drafts, the best of all being the Washington Commanders, who received my only A+ grade. First-year general manager Adam Peters, who came over from San Francisco, nailed his first draft, starting with quarterback Jayden Daniels, who they took second overall. He will be a star. Peters kept going after that, loading up on good, talented players, many of whom I liked throughout the process. Yes, my film evaluation plays into the grades".
Here is Prisco’s analysis on the picks:
Best Pick: It was their first one, quarterback Jayden Daniels. I think he will be the best quarterback from this draft. They locked up a franchise passer with pick No. 2. He will be dynamic.
Worst Pick: I didn’t love the pick of third-round receiver Luke McCaffrey, although he has talent and is improving. I think there were better options on the board — like Troy Franklin — when the pick was made.
The Skinny: In his first year running the draft, general manager Adam Peters killed it. It started by taking Daniels with the second overall pick but continued throughout the process. This is a team moving in the right direction. I liked all their second-round picks in defensive tackle Johnny Newton, corner Mike Sainristil, and tight end Ben Sinnott. They drafted a lot of talented football players."
Prisco is correct; the Commanders are headed in the right direction.
While no one can know for certain if these players will help reverse Washington’s fortunes, there are reasons to be optimistic, and that begins with Peters and Daniels.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
Logan Paulsen was on radio this morning and he was pretty high on both of Sinnott and Coleman.
He said he did a deep dive on Coleman from his '22 year when he played LT and said he has all the tools to take the spot. His length, feet, depth and physicality are really strong he will most likely just need to get used to the speed of NFL DE's but so will all of these guys.
For Sinnott he said he thinks he'll emerge as a massive weapon for this offense because he can line up almost anywhere. He's a strong blocker at the line or in the backfield and that allows him to play in multiple spots which will be a problem for teams because of his receiving ability.

I bet Peters sees Hart-throb as a clone of Brock Purdy.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
Ben Standig at The Atlantic posted a chart on the Relative Athletic Score for Coleman and it's nearly identical to that of Trent Williams. They are the same height and weight, Trent did better in the 40 (4.8 vs. 4.9 but a LT running 40 yards...eh), their 20 and 10 yard splits, vertical and broad jump and shuttle were nearly identical with Coleman doing better in the 3 cone (7.4 vs 7.6). Obviously a tall bar, but if he can approach that level of play, outstanding.
He also posted a few stats about DT Newton: 18 sacks and 27.5 TFL's in his career but perhaps most impressive was that he blocked 4 kicks....in 2023 alone!

Even though I did not have DT in my mind until maybe Day3, I am very happy with the Newton selection. We have a fairly solid DL rotation. Should be a fun DT #4 camp battle.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
I am very psyched about Newton. Going in to day 2, it was clear that there had to be a surplus of defensive talent because of all the QB'S and other offensive players drafted day 1. I'm really glad Peters just grabbed the biggest stud on the block instead of reaching for an OT. Our DE's aren't very exciting, but if we can terrorize QB's up the middle, it won't matter. My guess is that we'll get pressure off the edge from Frankie and maybe Jamin.

Seemed like KJ Henry was starting to come on at the end of the season, hopefully he kept up his work. I would love to see Newton at DE from time to time as well.

Re: Draft/ Free Agency,Coach, GM 2024
Let's talk run first :
- I expect a lot of "between the tackle runs" whether A gap or B gap.
- I would not be surprised to see a mix of "jet sweep mixed with RPO, but not often
- A lot of "run game" will include passing to the Rbs, especially Ekelar, and hopeful the occasional wheel route
- Don't forget that Ben Sinnott can handle H-Back
TE :
- I fully expect a lot of TE mixes, both in play design and player use.
- might even see both Sinnott and Bates on the field at the same time..in addition to Ertz obviously.
- If Armani Rogers is 100% and makes the team, consider him a weapon..maybe even as a kick returner
WR :
- TM is top dog without a doubt and will probably become Daniels best friend.
- Dotson will have a much improved season
- McCaffery will be a spot weapon at first ( including jet sweeps ), and by mid-season be a legit NFL threat.
- after them, it's a toss-up, i think Zaccheus will be useful. I'm interested in Tremaine, but as of now he, and most of the others are probably back end/bubble types until one steps us.
Not groundbreaking new, but i expect to see a solid mix of passes to all 3 levels : Rb dump offs, Slot/crossing routes from WR/TE, with a healthy dose of deep throws to keep everything honest.
The above is really going to be determined by how the OL progresses. I'm not over-confident, but I'm not panicking in any way either. I think we get a signing once cuts start happening. But there will be questions until i see how things develop. I think Coleman can handle LT, and maybe Wylie will do better in a zone scheme...but that's just a guess. I'm more confident in Coleman at LT than Wylie at RT. 2 OL on the roster that intrigue me are Michael Dieter who I liked coming out of Wisconson, and Mason Brooks who actually didn't look bad at camp last year. Can Stromberg stay healthy and has he gotten stronger? Same with Jaelyn Daniels..but he might be on the outside looking in if not.
That's all i got for now

I'm thinking we add OT Donovan Smith to our offensive line.

I think it would be a pretty good move too.

Jayden has plenty of weapons, and the supporting cast would be very very good with Donovan Smith. But I'm not extremely confident in the rookie. I wanted us to trade out of the pick and build the line. I hope he proves me very wrong. The running game will have to be a part of a successful offense. If not, the sack totals could be ugly. IMO, the defense will have to shine for significant improvement to occur in the standings. Mariota might be handed the keys to start the season, depending on camp. Coleman, McCafferty, and Jayden will be given every chance to start, but if they do is anybody's guess. Honestly, I think he could learn a lot from the bench for the first month or two.
